Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems difficult at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming assortment of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high, along with several trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
